Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate consumer unit for the photovoltaic system?

No, in most cases a separate circuit can be added within the existing consumer unit.  This allows the power that is generated by the PV system to be fed back into the installation. It is however important to note that the consumer unit should be checked by the installer to determine if they are suitable for the PV installation. Upon inspection if it is identified as being unsuitable, of if there are no available ways, your options are as follows:  

  1. Installation of an independent smaller consumer unit – dedicated for the PV circuit. This provides a safe installation without the need for changes to existing wiring. Most enclosures have inbuild protection and comply with the latest IET wiring regulations.   
  1. Upgrade of the consumer unit – this involves the full replacement of the existing board and upgrading the electrical installation accordingly.

 

What safety features are included in BG Electrical consumer units?

Our consumer units comply with BS7671 with protective devices that meet 18th Edition Amendment 3. These enclosures and devices ensure that the system operates safely, protecting both the home’s electrical system and the solar equipment during maintenance, faults, or emergencies. 

Are BG Electrical consumer units compliant with regulations for PV installations?

Yes, BG has a range of 18th Edition Amendment 3 Bi-directional devices for installations that feed into and draw power through the same circuit protection device. These consist of Bi-directional RCD’s, Circuit Breakers, and Double Pole RCBO devices.
